ABOUT ORLEANS PARISH CITY COURTS
First City Court and Second City Court for the Parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, are courts of limited jurisdiction. The territorial jurisdiction
of First City Court is the Eastbank of Orleans Parish. Second City Court's territorial jurisdiction is the Westbank of Orleans Parish.
Both Courts have jurisdiction over civil lawsuits where the amount in dispute does not exceed $25,000. Each court also has a Small Claims Division
involving claims where the amount in dispute is $5,000 or less. Additionally, both courts adjudicate landlord/tenant disputes involving residential
and commercial properties where the rental charges are as follows: 1) daily rental of one hundred fifty dollars or less; (2) weekly rental of five
hundred dollars or less; (3) monthly rental of three thousand dollars or less; and, (4) annual rental of thirty-six thousand dollars or less.
Some types of cases cannot be instituted in City Court. The following are cases which cannot be brought in City Court: cases involving title to real
property; cases involving the right to public office or position; cases involving civil or political rights; cases involving annulment of marriage;
divorce, separation of property or alimony; matters of succession, interdiction, receivership, liquidation, habeas corpus or quo warranto proceedings;
cases in which the state, city or other political corporation is a defendant; and, matters concerning tutorship, curatorship, emancipation or partition
First City Court and Second City Court have jurisdiction over appeals filed by any person aggrieved by a decision of the Traffic Court of New Orleans
concerning a traffic violation enforced by the City of New Orleans' automated traffic enforcement system.
